Things That Cause Trouble with Starting Your Vehicle

Craig Hicks

The moment that you start to experience challenges with turning on your car, your first thought is probably an issue with the battery. This misassumption is commonly made by many motorists since the battery is what provides the car with the power it needs to operate. However, if this battery is fairly new, it is unlikely that a dead battery could be the root of your woes. Instead, a hidden problem could be the issue at hand. Although factors such as continual exposure to extreme temperature changes will have an adverse impact on the functioning of your battery, here are a few other causes of trouble with starting with your vehicle that you should look into by opting for a car service.

The ignition switch is defective

Once your battery is found to be in optimum working order, the first component that the mechanic will investigate is the ignition switch. This auto part is responsible for getting your car started since it provides the electrical connection that is between the starter and the battery. Therefore, while some people take this component for granted, the reality is that it provides a considerable percentage of the electricity required to get your car moving. So how can you tell if the ignition switch is compromised? Simply put your car key into the ignition and then turn it partially instead of the entire way. If your dashboard does not light up, it is likely that the ignition switch is defective and will require replacing.

The fuel pump has malfunctioned

The fuel pump is tasked with ensuring that fuel in your tank is transferred into the engine at a steady pressure. Thus, if the fuel pump is in jeopardy, it means that your engine is not receiving the fuel that it needs to work and you will be unable to start your car. There are a couple of ways that you can diagnose this issue. First, insert your key into the ignition switch and turn it while keeping an ear out for unusual sounds. If you can hear whining sounds, the fuel pump will need professional attention. Alternatively, you should take your car to a mechanic and request a fuel injection service, which will help the professional determine why your fuel pump is not working as it should. During car servicing, the mechanic will also investigate the fuel filters since clogged filters impede the flow of fuel and this will hinder the engine's function.
