Why Buy Name-Brand Auto Parts?

Craig Hicks

Making repairs to your vehicle can be expensive, especially if you'll need to replace several parts under the car's hood. You can save money on your needed vehicle repair by buying off-brand or generic parts, and these parts can sometimes be sufficient for your needs, but name-brand parts are typically recommended instead. Note a few reasons why name-brand parts are often considered a better investment for your vehicle, so you can make the best decision about the parts you need for your next repair job.

Longevity

Some generic parts are high quality and will last for many years, but not all of them are! Name-brand parts are often made with better materials, including thicker rubber and steel, and these materials are more likely to withstand vibrations, high heat levels and other such wear and tear. In turn, you may actually wind up replacing those parts less often when you invest in quality, name-brand parts, even if those parts are a bit more expensive to purchase.

Resale value

Using name-brand parts can help to protect your vehicle's resale value. Car buyers know that many generic parts are not going to last as long as name-brand parts, so those buyers may be more likely to purchase a used vehicle if they know name-brand parts were used during repairs. The money you get from a used car that was repaired with name-brand parts may offset the added costs of those parts, making them a good investment for any car that you might put on the market in the near future.

Responsiveness

Vehicle parts need to work together in order to respond properly; for example, when you press the brake pedal, brake fluid needs to move through hoses while the brake pads squeeze the rotors, causing the tyres to stop moving. Using generic parts that don't respond as they should can mean a delayed braking response and more wear and tear on the brake pads and rotors.

In the same way, the vehicle's oxygen sensor and fuel pump both need to respond to pressure on the gas pedal, delivering more oxygen and fuel to the engine to increase combustion. If any of these parts don't respond as they should, the engine may have less pickup, or it may tend to hesitate and even outright stall. Using name-brand parts that are a better fit and more responsive to other parts around them will mean better performance from your vehicle and less wear and tear on all its parts.

Feel Confident Behind the Wheel: Maintain Your Own Car

If, like me, you like to drive and are something of a petrol-head, then feeling confident is part of what it is all about when motoring. Knowing what to do if you face a hazard on the road or how to deal with a blowout is all part of the driving experience, to me. Having said that, few motorists really know what checks they should be making to ensure their car is properly roadworthy. I've spent the last few years upgrading my car maintenance skills and - although I'm no qualified mechanic - I now undertake all sorts of jobs needed to keep my car running properly and safely. Read my blog and pick up some car maintenance tips that anyone can do.
